I loved this analogy. I agree that in the end, the money isn’t ours. My heart gets that, but my logical brain pushes back against the thought. In talks with other Christians (mostly men), the common theme I see is that giving to God in itself isn’t truly the problem. It’s the vessel God seemingly uses to receive that offering. A part of us wants to be in control of how that money is used, and the lack of transparency in some modern churches creates a stumbling block to freely giving. That’s why I appreciate you talking about giving in a broader context. But what would you say to those who feel as if giving to the church is by far the most important aspect of giving to God?

I agree 💯 that we often associate and limit giving to church tithing or a ministry organization. There are some churches that do provide transparency to a certain degree  about whether the money goes (i.e. annual business meetings with the congregation, etc.) but usually it’s a black box once you give the money away. And honestly, I don’t think that’s good stewardship of what God has given to us.

Think about the example. The boy could’ve given his five dollars to the toy store and hope the toy store “did right” with his investment. But he was given information to an individual in need, as often God does with us (impressing upon us about someone’s need), and it was up to the kid to act accordingly. That is how we can be like Jesus who cared more about the individual than the institution. 

I would challenge anyone to extend their giving to more than just the church though. Definitely give your tithe where you serve, but there are people and causes that God has assigned you to make an investment. Not just your pockets but your heart and your time. It’s not enough to just throw money at something and say you’ve done your part. Do research, pray and ask God to reveal where to invest your “talents”. Then obey.
